Recent email conversations with Sheehan about various words and the hobbyists they
describe were so interesting that I knew it had to be addition to the Collectibles site.
I mentioned that I was a collector of cookie jars and was there a correct word to
describe us. A day or two later I received a detailed explanation with a word to
describe cookie jar collectors and how that name was developed.
CRUSTOLLAPHILE [crust-OL-la-phile]
From Michael J. Sheehan:
"Crustum" or "crustulum" are the standard Latin words for Pastry and "olla" is the type
of jar. To this mix we'll add the -phile root, a lover or collector of ...
In summary:
- crust- = pastry/cookie
- -olla = jar/container
- -phile = lover of/collector

Sheehan has graciously supplied us with a list of words found in the dictionary or
used by collectors to describe their love of a collection. Take the word quiz to
see how many YOU get right or just check them out in the word glossary.
Part two of this article, next week, will be words Sheehan has invented for different hobby groups and collectors.
