While Superman enthusiasts look forward to "Superman Returns," which hits theaters this summer, Superman collectors look back in time, searching for the idolized Man of Steel immortalized in his own steel lunchbox. An eBay seller from Minneapolis recently sold a rare Universal Superman lunchbox from 1954 for $4,649. For passionate lunchbox collectors, this is often the most sought-after box. The seller found it many years ago at an antique mall and sold it on eBay during a seven-day auction that ended with 18 bids.
The seller described the lunchbox as being in excellent condition, with sharp graphics without scratches; shiny, rust-free hardware; and glossy colors that look like new. The lunchbox came with its accompanying thermos, which was also in near mint condition. According to the seller's description, "you hold this box in your hand there is a feeling of awe."
The lunchbox was sold (December 2005) using a Reserve Price Auction Format, which allows sellers to specify the minimum amount that they will accept for their item. Bidders cannot see the specified amount, and to win the auction, the highest bidder must meet the reserve price. If the reserve price is not met, the seller is not obligated to sell the item.

The seller provided 10 photos, including close-ups, side images, and images of the inside. With rare items such as this, photography plays a key role in determining the outcome of the listing. Clear and detailed photography helps the seller to showcase an item, communicating the item's authenticity and history to potential buyers.
