Lefton China by Ruth McCarthy
Review

A few years ago Lefton pieces could be found at bargain prices, that is not happening anymore. With the higher prices every time I go to the flea market, I decided to check out a Lefton China book. What a pleasant surprise this one was.

Lefton China was published in 1998 by a collector who was so smitten with Lefton she quickly accumulated over 600 pieces of the china.

McCarthy tells how the company started many years ago and little bit about the history of George Lefton, the founder. The pictures are the best part of any collector book and these are excellent. Colors appear to be true and the close ups are extremely good. Although different color backgrounds are sometimes distracting, this is not the case here. The different backgrounds enhance the individual pictures making the figures pop right out.

What I really love about this book is the markings shown with the different series. Since Lefton is traditionally marked with stickers that are easily removed or washed off, McCarthy shows the markings along with the sticker (if available). For example a cute beagle puppy is marked with a number #H8165. If the Lefton sticker was taken off -- it would be hard to tell what it was. This documentation is excellent for the collector who wants to find an elusive Lefton piece that others might pass by. It was surprising to find out about a few pieces in my own collection, I did not know they were Lefton until they were spotted in the book!

The book is a potpourri of Lefton pieces, separated in sections such as animals, banks, bells, birds, etc. Each figure is given an approximate price along with the size and description. The prices appear to be pretty close to what is found in the midwest area.

There were only two things I found lacking in the book. A little more of the history of the company would have been great and an index in the back would be helpful. It could take a while if you are looking for a particular piece.

If you are a pottery or china collector, this book needs a spot on your shelf! List price is $29.95
